Allah says in Quran that we should invoke him with his best names:
وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا وَذَرُوا الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي أَسْمَائِهِ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ (180)

Scholars and scientists gathered names of Allah from the Holy Quran and great Sunnah.
They get names of Allah in many ways; you can find that some scholars get 99 names which are different in some names from other scholars according to every scholar's research in Quran and Sunnah. So, we have an important question:
How many names of Allah; what is the exact number of Allah's names?
From the Hadith of Prophet Mohamed SAW, he mentions that Allah SWT has 99 names, but indeed, Allah has more than 99 names, but what the prophet intended by mentioning that Allah has 99 names that these names are the most common or the most famous names among them the greatest name of Allah. From this fact, scholars did their best to get these most famous or popular names from Quran and Sunnah. From here, if you count what scholars gathered you'll find that most of these names are similar but some of them are different, and if you count the whole or the complete number, you'll find that it is more than 99 names and this comes back to every scholar search and effort, and actually this doesn't mean that they are wrong because everyone has its guide or proof from Quran or Sunnah, but everyone thinks that his group is the most famous according to his research.
Doctrines of scholars in Allah names
Scholars in gathering or mentioning the names of Allah didn't mention them by themselves, because there are certain conditions they followed to be sure that this name among names of Allah or not. So they mentioned only the names that Allah mentioned in the Holy Quran or the prophet mentioned in his Sunnah. Because names of Allah is among the hidden facts which are told only by Allah SWT or his prophet SAW.
The evidence that Allah has more than 99 names
There is a hadith by prophet Mohamed SAW when he prays to Allah saying "I ask you by every name you have, or with every name you named it by, or with every name you teach to one of your creatures, or with every name you make it hide from your creature to make the Quran as spring in my heart…"
So, from this hadith, we learn that Allah SWT has more than 99 names, but the most famous are 99 names.
